A. Leon Capel founded Capel rugs in 1917. At the time he was only 17 years old. Though he started out producing only small braided area rugs the company evolved into a powerhouse in the rug industry. Leon helped usher in the use of the braided area rug. Before this Early American settlers used mostly animal skins to cover floor cracks and to keep their floors warm. Much in the same manner that girls braid their hair, the settlers use to braid together what ever scraps of material they could find around their homes to make braided area rugs. Mr. Capel saw this as an opportunity and decided to form his own area rug company, which is known today as Capel Rugs.
Though Capel Rugs still focus on braided rugs they also make other area rug styles like Persian, Native American, Lodge, Animal Skins, Solid color and various indoor/outdoor area rugs. A wide variety of choices is a key element of Capel Rugs philosophy. Whether you want hand-tufted, hand knotted or machine made area rugs, they have an option that will suit you. Capel Rugs also have many area rug shapes including rectangular, oval and round.
