Keeping a Nursery Simple

Star from NY -

I have a 2 year old daughter and a son on the way. I have kept both of their rooms very simple. Actually all of the bedrooms, including ours, are painted the same color, white chocolate, like a cream color, they all have green rugs that sit in the middle of the floor with natural hardwood floors around the edge.

My daughter's room had a pink bumper in her crib with the matching quilt on the wall. That is pretty much all the decorating I did in her room. Now she is 2 and loves Dora. She is in a big girl bed and has Dora sheets etc. but I didn't go crazy and find Dora wall border or a Dora rug.

My son's room has a blue bumper and the matching quilt on the wall. I know in a few years he will like sports or cars or G.I. Joe.

I didn't want to choose a theme for their rooms for a few different reasons. One is that kids change their minds all the time. I didn't want to spend time re-decorating their rooms every year. Then when they are old enough they can choose what their room will be decorated in and can help in the decorating process. Pick out paint color etc.

I know some people who go nuts decorating a nursery with the matching rug with the matching wall border and the fancy headboard on the toddler bed. I just chose not to do this. Furniture and decorating a child's room is not cheap. I would rather spend the money on something else.

I like your approach. It sounds like a perfectly good and reasonable way to go about it to me. If you're handy with painting and papering yourself, there's no reason not to change at a whim. Otherwise, it's such an expensive chore!
